When it comes to business, women have made remarkable strides over the years. Yet, the path to success for women entrepreneurs and employees remains marked by unique challenges that demand attention and action.
Let’s take a look at some of these obstacles and explore how society, businesses, and individuals can work together to overcome them.
Entrepreneurship
For women entrepreneurs, the journey to success is often paved with hurdles that require immense resilience and determination. According to research done in the UK by Tide, almost 1 in 5 women cited gender as a barrier to successfully launching a business.
Aside from just being a woman, another challenge you’ll likely face when trying to start a business is access to funding. In Europe, only 2% of invested capital goes to all-women founded teams and only 5% to mixed teams. This means men-only teams are getting 93% of invested capital! This significant funding gap restricts women’s ability to scale their ventures and limits potential for growth and innovation.
Gender bias can also manifest in networking and collaboration opportunities. Women entrepreneurs may find it harder to access mentorships, partnerships, and industry connections, further hindering their prospects.
Overcoming these challenges demands a concerted effort from every direction to break down systemic barriers and create an inclusive business ecosystem that recognises and supports the entrepreneurial aspirations of women.

Women in the workplace
In the corporate world, women employees continue to come up against more than their fair share of gender-influenced challenges. Gender disparity still frequently rears its head when it comes to pay, training and development opportunities, promotions, and more. For every 100 men who are promoted from entry level to managerial roles, only 87 women are (and only 82 women of colour). Sadly, it seems that in many cases the glass ceiling still very much exists.
Work-life balance is another critical concern for women in the workplace. Women frequently juggle multiple roles, balancing professional responsibilities with duties at home. Striking a balance (or even just trying to) can be exhausting.
Empowering change
Addressing these unique challenges requires a multifaceted approach. Businesses can take the lead through genuine diversity and inclusion initiatives that are created with purpose and implemented consistently. This might involve mentorship programs, leadership training, and actively encouraging women to apply for senior positions. It can also look like flexible work arrangements, generous leave policies, and initiatives that promote and support employee well-being.
For entrepreneurs, fostering an environment that encourages investment in women-led start ups is paramount. Venture capitalists and angel investors can play a pivotal role in closing the funding gap by actively seeking out and supporting women entrepreneurs.
Societal change also requires education and awareness though. Efforts to challenge gender stereotypes and promote women role models can help create a more level playing field from an early age.
Coaching also plays a part in this. By working with a good coach for your business or for you personally, you can establish goals, needs and challenges and work together to overcome the barriers and find success.
However you want to look at it, our collective attention and action is needed. By dismantling barriers, promoting inclusivity, and advocating for equal opportunities, we can pave the way for a future where women can thrive as entrepreneurs, leaders, and employees. Embracing diversity not only benefits women as individuals but enriches society and the business world as a whole.
